An alert issued by the National Weather Service cautions local residents to protect plants by covering them from the ground up to create a greenhouse effect; to make sure outside animals have warm, dry shelter, sufficient food and fresh, unfrozen water and to wrap or otherwise insulate pipes that are open to outside conditions.
Washington Parish County Agent Henry Harrison has also said that giving outside plants a good soaking before a drastic drop in temperature can help them to make it through a freeze with less damage than those that are left dry.
The hard freeze warning was issued for the Florida Parishes of Louisiana and counties in extreme southwest and coastal Mississippi.
