BOGALUSA n Local celebrities gathered at City Hall yesterday to ready the town for the Wild Game and BBQ Cook-off planned for June 19 at Cassidy Park to benefit the Seven Acres Substance Abuse Center.

Celebrity cooks heading up their own teams include Sheriff Aubrey Jones, BPD Police Chief Jerry Agnew, Mayor Mack McGehee, BFD Chief Ronnie Manning and FPD Chief Lynn Armand, who was unable to attend the gathering.

"The fire department's famous for cooking," Manning said. "I think we're gonna take the prize."

"Well, I don't want to be discombobulating, but we're going to be real cooks. We're the best cooks there are," Agnew said, adding that he and his team will have a whole hog prepared for the event.

Jones said he'll have good food prepared, although he's counting on other cooks on his team to do the job.

"I don't know if I could boil water," he said, "but my wife's a great cook. She's been cooking for me for 37 years."

Jones said his team will prepare homemade chili and serve up chili dogs, chili burgers and other good foods.

Casama will add a taste of his heritage to the cookoff, as his team plans to prepare Filipino food for the event.

"It's a cross between Spanish and Malaysian cooking," he said.

One of his specialties will be a famous Filipino dish called adobo, or meat cooked in soy sauce, bay leaves, vinegar and garlic.

SASAC board member Fran Harry said 15 teams have signed up, and that winners will be determined by a currently "secret" panel of judges.

The event is from 4-7 p.m.

Teams of four will compete in the following categories: beef, fowl, pork, seafood and wild game. A $25 team fee applies, and entry forms are available by contacting Will DeMuth at 735-7279.

Tickets for the event are $10 for adults and $3 for children age 7-12, and are available at the following locations: Franklinton — ACE Hardware, Circle T Fertilizer, Citizens Bank, Franklinton Police Department, Maurice Magee Furniture, Seal Service Station, Washington Parish Sheriff's Office; and Bogalusa — Citizens Bank, City Hall Water Department, City Hall Police Department, Dunaway's, and the WPSO substation. Tickets will also be available at the Low Tide restaurant in Sun. Children under 7 will be admitted free.

SASAC is a voluntary drug rehabilitation facility that provides residential social detox to male victims of addictive diseases, giving them an opportunity to reform their lives for a greater purpose.

In addition to the competition, there will be plenty of food, hunting and fishing equipment exhibits and entertainment. To volunteer, call SASAC at 848-2288.
