BOGALUSA - Clear skies and sunny weather were the perfect setting for the Poole's Bluff Family Fishing Tournament on Saturday, as 32 teams and over 100 people from the surrounding area gathered to celebrate the victory of the Poole's Bluff Conservation Association.
The PBCA recently helped broker a settlement between the state and the Army Corps of Engineers to help keep the Pearl River canal system open to the public after the COE threatened to shut off public access due to budget cuts. The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has agreed to assume jurisdiction over the system, while Washington and St. Tammany Parish have agreed to help with general upkeep.

First prize in total weight was taken by 10-year-old Cade Crane of Bogalusa, whose total catch weight of 21-pounds 8.5-ounces was helped out by a 15-pound-five-ounce catfish that he hauled in. Cade fished with his father Clay Crane and attends Annunciation Catholic School.
The team of Mike and Leland Henry took seconod plce with a combined catch of 15-pounds-12-ounces, while Patton Bush and James Young took third with a weight of 6-pounds-10-ounces.
Young earned first place in the biggest bass competition by pulling in a 3-pound-12-ounce fish, which he caught on a white spinner.
New Orleans radio and television personally Don Debuc attended the event as a special guest weighmaster. Debuc hosts a weekly radio show on outdoor sports on WWL 870 AM.
"There were more than three winners here," said Debuc. "Everybody out here had a good time, and that was the purpose of this."
Oscar Pierce of the PBCA seconded that opinion.
"Everything went great," said Pierce, who hopes to make the tournament and annual event. "We had over 100 people out here and it was a great success. It was a good day of celebration for everybody of what we accomplished. Everybody did a great job of putting this on."
