'We salute...'
Our View

Each Friday, The Daily News will recognize individuals and businesses in Washington Parish who have gone “above and beyond” in their efforts to make this a better place to live, work, play and raise a family.

We believe that an integral part of a community’s wellbeing is an attitude and arena where people who do good things … who work to improve life for others … who try to make a difference … are recognized and saluted.

Because this is a salute to members of the community of Washington Parish, we solicit your recommendations for groups or individuals to be considered for inclusion.

This week we salute:

• Frances Mills has for decades been a volunteer for the BMC Medical Auxiliary. Now, she is the financial agent and is responsible for all purchases, inventory, pricing, re-stocking, accounting, banking, bill paying and training of clerks. The “Pink Ladies” have donated thousands of dollars to benefit the hospital.

• BOGALUSA’S 14-YEAR-OLD DIXIE LEAGUE ALL-STARS, headed to Bossier City and the Louisiana State Tournament, where they will join their Washington parish neighbors from FRANKLINTON.

• DR. KERRY STERLING, DR. NOOR ALI JIWANI, DR. CANDICE LeDUFF KNIGHT and DR. HONGXIE “PETER” SHAN, new residents in the LSU Rural Family Residency Program here in Bogalusa. All four reside in Bogalusa.

• VENTURER CREW 313, sponsored by The Daily News, on sweeping first, second and third in the Mississippi State Games canoe races on Bonita Lake in Meridian, Miss. Up next for Crew 313 is the 110-mile Bogue Chitto River Canoe Marathon.

• BOGALUSA LITTLE LEAGUE 9-10 and 11-12 ALL-STARS, on qualifying for state tournament play. The 9-10 team will play in Hammond beginning tonight while the 11-12 squad will be in Shreveport, also beginning tonight.

• Community volunteers, such as MARY “PUNKIN” TALBOT, BFD CAPT. DONALD LADNER AND FIREFIGHTER CHRIS WILLIAMS, who helped bring the Washington Parish Summer Reading Program at the Bogalusa Library come to life. The five-week program drew rave reviews from children, parents and grandparents alike.

• Youngsters who attend CATHY’S LITTLE STEPS, who took to the streets for their second Trike-A-Thon to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. The youngsters raised $1,600 to help children with various forms of cancer.
