Jimmie Varnado of Franklinton received a text message on his cell phone Saturday that claimed to be from Capital One warning him that his credit card information might have been compromised. The texter advised him to call the “security department” at a certain 1-866 telephone number to verify his information.

Varnado banks at Capital One. He called the number.

“It was an automated deal,” he said. “It asked for my credit card number, the expiration date and the pin number. I was busy. I was not thinking. Like a fool, I did it. I gave them everything they needed to steal me blind.”

Varnado realized his mistake almost immediately.

“I called Capital One and told the woman what happened,” he said. “She said I was not the first one.”

Varnado was lucky.

“I got through quick enough,” he said. “There were no charges.”

But the next person might not get off so easy, so he wants to spread the word.

The text initially seemed legitimate, said Varnado.

“They seemed to knew I was with Capital One,” he said. “But Capital One said they only deal by mail. If something comes over the phone, it’s not from them.”

The FBI is currently checking into the case, said Varnado.

In the mean time, he warns everyone to stay alert.

“Be careful with your information,” said Varnado.
