Janis A. Buckalew

Janis A. Buckalew, age 63, a resident of Bogalusa, died Tuesday, Feb. 10 in Louisiana Heart Hospital, Lacombe, La. She was an active member of Lee’s Creek Baptist Church.

A retired educator, she was a graduate of Sicily Island, La. High School, received Bachelors and Masters degrees at Northeast Louisiana University and a Masters Plus 30 at Southeastern Louisiana University.

She worked for the Bogalusa City School System for over 36 years as a teacher, principal, coordinator and supervisor and taught at Bowling Green School, Franklinton for a couple of years. After retirement, she was a volunteer at her grandson’s school, Annunciation. She dedicated her entire life to children.

She was a devoted wife of 34 years and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and touched many lives throughout her journey as an educator.

She is survived by her husband, William A. Buckalew of Bogalusa; a daughter, Ann (Joe) Culpepper of Bogalusa; two brothers, Joe (Myra) Boyd of McKinney, Texas and Bill (Becky) Boyd of Brandon, Miss.; two grandchildren, Michael and Will Culpepper; numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 5 to 9 p.m. today and continue on Thursday at 9 a.m. until the funeral service at 2 p.m. in the chapel. The Rev. Josh Smith will officiate with interment to follow at Lee’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
