The man suspected of shooting a security guard who was trying to break up a fight at Lem’s Bar in Hackley before dawn Saturday has been arrested in Atlanta.

Erik D. Miller, 33, of Gulfport, Miss., was arrested Wednesday and charged with second degree murder. He refused to waive extradition, and as of press time the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office was awaiting the completion of paperwork to bring him back to Louisiana.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said Miller, a truck driver, was taken into custody after he drove his Knight Transportation truck from Danville, Va., to Forest Park, Ga., an Atlanta suburb.

The shooting occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Several shots were reportedly fired, and Rayfus Brumfield, 26, of Tickfaw, a former resident of Washington Parish, was fatally wounded. He died at the scene.

A number of eyewitnesses were questioned, according to the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office. Investigators obtained information linking Miller to the crime and learned that he could be in the Atlanta area.

An arrest warrant was issued for Miller. The information was entered into the National Crime Information Center, and local authorities worked with those in Atlanta who took him into custody.

Sheriff Robert Crowe praised the quick arrest and teamwork. He asks anyone with additional information on the shooting to contact detectives at 839-7809.
