Franklinton Community Theatre to hold tryouts for ‘God’s Favorite’

Franklinton Community Theatre plans to present “God’s Favorite” a comedy by Neil Simon.

Tryouts will be held on Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1015 Cleveland Street.

This is Simon’s modern tale, loosely based on the Bible book of Job.  Joe is a wealthy and respected businessman living high in suburban Long Island.

God and the Devil make a bet. The Devil says that if enough pressure is put on Joe, he will reject God.  God takes the bet and puts His faith in Joe.

Sydney Lipton, God’s messenger, a wise cracking guy from Queens, with a big “G” on his t-shirt, is sent to test Joe’s faith. As with the real Job, Joe is plagued with all sorts of disasters.

His factory burns down, Joe is afflicted with various ailments, his house and swimming pool are destroyed.  This is not helped by his family, which includes his dumbbell wife, Rose, his wayward son, David, his twins, Sara and Ben (who’s combined IQ equals 160) and Mady and Morris, the maid and duke.  However, in the end, everything works out.

The characters are: Joe and Rose Benjamin, ages 50 plus; David, age 25 to 30; twins, age 17 to 20’s; maid and butler, any age (mature); and Sidney, age 20’s to 40’s.
