Charles Jules Gadmer Jr., 89, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died on Saturday, June 13 at Regency Hospital in Covington, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on Nov. 13, 1919 in New Orleans, he was a longtime resident of Bogalusa. Paw Paw, as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was a goodhearted man who will be greatly missed by his family whom he always put first.

Mr. Gadmer was a veteran of World War II, having served in the invasions of Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. He was awarded the Purple Heart medal and the American Defense Service medal for his wartime service. He was a 42-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

After the war, he attended Tulane University and graduated in business. He then worked for the United States Department of the Treasury in the Internal Revenue Service for over 30 years. Upon retirement he received the Albert Gallatin Award for outstanding years of service. He then worked for Joseph Black, CPA, for 13 years.

Mr. Gadmer was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving as treasurer for several years. He was involved in various community activities, including the original 911 board and the Bogalusa Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Cooper Gadmer; three daughters: Barbara (John) Alston of Bogalusa, Susan (Don) Sanders of Baton Rouge and Margaret (James) Farr of Baton Rouge; a brother, Gaudenz (Betty) Gadmer of Houston; five grandchildren: Rachael Mohon of Bogalusa, Matt Mohon of Covington, Michael Sanders and Adrienne Sanders, both of Baton Rouge and Kimberly (Neelesh) Mehendale of Dallas; and two great-grandchildren, Leena and Raja Mehendale.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles J. Gadmer Sr. and Margaret Maier Gadmer.

Visitation was held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home Monday, June 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. when Rev. Robert Belknap officiated the funeral service in the chapel. Entombment followed at the Sanctuary of Peace Mausoleum in Ponemah Cemetery.

Pallbearers were sons-in-law and grandsons. The family extends its appreciation to Sue Whittington and Tammy Draught for their care and support.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
