Arrests made at DWI checkpoint

Officers with three police agencies conducted a DWI checkpoint at the intersection of Louisiana Highway 10 and Section Line Road in Franklinton last week.

Officers with the Franklinton Police Department, Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police screened 162 drivers and conducted five field sobriety tests. Of the five sobriety tests given, four drivers were arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to the Franklinton Police Department. Two additional arrests were made for drug charges.

The checkpoint started at 10 p.m. on June 20, and lasted until 4 the next morning.

More DWI checkpoints in the Franklinton area will continue during the summer months, said FPD Lt. Justin Brown.

Brown thanked WPSO, LSP and the Franklinton Fire Department, which providing exterior lighting, for participating.

The operation, along with increased sobriety enforcement patrols, are funded by a $25,000 grant through the Louisiana Department of Highway Safety. An additional $15,000 has been secured for DWI enforcement for 2010.

Arrested for DWI were: Wilmer Magee Jr., 56, of Franklinton; Acey Young, 19, of Angie; Mitchell Alexander, 31, of Slaughter, La.; and Telissa Conerly, 28, of Bogalusa.

Ginger Alexander, 28, of Zachary, La., was arrested for possession of marijuana, and Michelle St. Martin, 24, of Baker, La., was arrested for possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
