It’s been illegal to shoot off fireworks within the city limits of both Bogalusa and Franklinton for years, but that hasn’t come close to putting an end to the popping and sudden bursts of color that generally begin all around the towns a few days before the fourth of July and continue until a few days after the holiday.
But, despite a couple of showers early in the week, this year is abnormally dry. A burn ban is still in effect. And the Franklinton and Bogalusa police departments vow to be on patrol and ready to stop anybody caught endangering public safety by shooting off fireworks in city limits.
Officials warn that fireworks can cause fires, and it doesn’t make sense to take a chance.
“We always have some that are going to do it,” Bogalusa Mayor Mack McGehee said last week. “But they need to understand it’s extremely dry, and they really don’t want to cause a fire when they’re doing something illegal. Everybody should use good judgment. We will be out issuing tickets and citations.”
