‘We salute...’

Published/Last Modified on Friday, July 3, 2009 9:34 AM CDT

Each Friday, The Daily News will recognize individuals and businesses in Washington Parish who have gone “above and beyond” in their efforts to make this a better place to live, work, play and raise a family.

We believe that an integral part of a community’s wellbeing is an attitude and arena where people who do good things … who work to improve life for others … who try to make a difference … are recognized and saluted.

Because this is a salute to members of the community of Washington Parish, we solicit your recommendations for groups or individuals to be considered for inclusion.

This week we salute:

• State Sen. Ben Nevers and Rep. Harold Ritchie, who helped secure funding with the Legislature to open the newly constructed Bogue Chitto State Park in Washington Parish.

• Milton Gholar and other organizers of the BHS summer stem camp, which provided a healthy week of math and science skills to local teenagers last week, ending in trip to the Stennis Space Center.

• Rayburn Correctional Center and area businesses, who organized a prison job fair for inmates at the Angie facility in the hopes of getting soon-to-be released prisoners a job and proper to start to a new life.

• Veterans, patriots and Americans of all backgrounds, for your courage, optimisim and making American the greatest country in the world. May all have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July.
