Many tragedies can be prevented

The State Fire Marshal’s office has not yet determined the cause of the fire that claimed the lives of two elderly Varnado women Friday.

Regardless, their deaths can be a reminder to others to be careful and to make sure that they have one or more working smoke alarms in their homes.

Everyone is advised to check their alarms today. If you don’t have one, get one. And install it according to package directions. Mounting them on some spots is better than others to ensure the best results.

Regular rounds to check that stove burners, ovens, coffee pots, etc. are off, and that heaters are clear and safe is another good idea. One of those rounds should be made just before bedtime.
