Let’s talk, don’t argue

The arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr., a black Harvard scholar, at his home in Cambridge recently has caused a flurry of media coverage and countless stories about race relations, racial profiling and police jumping to conclusions.

According to the Associated Press, Gates was arrested last week by Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge, Mass., police department, who is white, after a caller telephoned 911 and reported an apparent burglary. Gates, who had been trying to get into his own home, was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge, quickly dropped by Cambridge police.

The case really went nationwide when President Barack Obama said the police “acted stupidly.”

However, the police were doing their job when they responded to the call of a possible break-in.

It seems Gates was a little taken aback by their actions, and shared some words that the policemen didn’t care for.

Both parties should have let it go at that. Instead hard-headedness was responded to with hard-headedness, and Gates was arrested.

We feel both parties could have done a better job of communicating.

It’s a bad policy to argue with police. Even if they might be wrong.

" this entire incident could have been wrapped up in less than five minutes if this outspoken teacher who had confronted the police before this time had just extended the courtesy to the police that he did at the airport. He had all of his credentials at hand on the porch that he could have displayed IMMEDIATELY, when asked for by police. He would have never been allowed to board a flight to china had he displayed this same "CHIP ON SHOULDER ATTITUDE" Instead he proceded to play the race card and did alot of finger pointing and refused to showanID "

" The entire article shows that this writer, a true "good ole boy" is still trapped in the 1960's. Dr. Gates was unjustly treated. If I were to enter your home and do exactly the same thing you would have reacted the same way. Washington Parish still looks at race first. This is proven by the leaders and also by this paper itself. When will Washigton Parish wake up? "

" What the heck: We'll just have to agree to disagree. I understand the police being on high alert after a BIP call. I'm sure even Mr. Gates expected them to investigate. My point is that he DID cooperate in the investigation. He presented his ID and proved it was his home on the spot. But yes, he did so rudely and disrespectfully. I would have expected the cop to say sorry and leave after no crime was found. Instead he create a BS charge to "get even", because someone said something he didn't like loudly (but not illegal). It's unprofessional. "

" just me: no, the alleged burglar at my house should not be compensated for being irrate & arrested, because IT'S NOT HIS HOUSE. At a minimum he's traspassing. And yes, if Mr. Gates were white, I'd also say he should be compensated for his loss of sleep, work, income, reputation, future income, attorney/bail/court fees, and anything else that was a result of this blatant abuse of power. Yes, if he had not "played the race card" he probably would not have been arrested. But last I checked, that was called freedom of speech and not "disturbing the peace". Big difference. "

Citizen Gates' home was being properly protected against what the police perceived as a possible break in by intruders.

This officer should be congratulated for his heroic action in this matter! "

" lumber girl, compensation for the police doing their job? Give me a break. If a neighbor thinks someone is breaking into your house, that person gets irrate and the police have every right to arrest him, do you think they should commensate him too? And what if Gates were a white man? Would you want him to get some money then?

It's always about "what can I get" now and that makes me sad. What is wrong with people today?

You can't take the law into your own hands. "

" Cont…I know that I was a military cop, but responding to any situation has its own risks and dangers and you have to be alert, because a peaceful situation can turn hostile very quickly.
The cop that responded to Mr. Gates house for a possible break in is a dangerous situation. What would have happened if it was not Mr. Gates at the house? Since the call was 2 men, the cop only see the one, so he could be thinking that the other man has Mr. Gates as a hostage. The cop was following his training. "

" lumber_girl...I will have to disagree with you about Mr. Gates deserving a public apology & being compensated. The cop had a job to do investigate the possible break in. If Gates would not have played the race card, which I might add on the wrong cop, since he does race training for the dept. Again, my earlier post, the cop did apologies to me for pulling me over. I let the officer conduct his investigation and he explained to me why he initiated the stop. The difference is that I cooperated with the cop and Mr. Gates did not! "

" Thank God he wasn’t killed; cops in this country shoot first & ask questions later & shoot to kill not to maim. This was a clear case of abuse of power. I’ve experienced the powerlessness when it comes to law enforcement. My husband legally & expertly changed lanes, was pulled over, questioned: how many warrants to you have, how many times you have been arrested, flashlight shown in kids faces, couldn’t find any thing wrong & let go. My kids lost their respect for cops we never had it. "

" This story is a prime example of what is wrong with our country now and continues to get worse. Any time a black person is arrested they automatically start with the race card. Someone teach them to accept responsiblity and respect the law! "

" Mr. Gates deserves a public apology and to be compensated for wrongful arrest. He would not have been in a position to "disturb the peace", had the "peace officer" acted in a responsible and respectful manner when questioning him. He proved it was his house. Apologize and leave! Police make mistakes too and need to own up to it and not act like big-headed small town thugs who have too much power. "

" It seems like the easy way out is to throw out the race card. Our President should have said No Comment if he had no idea what he was talking about. It seems if he's not pre informed of what to say on the tele prompter then he can't speak correctly and he really messed this up. How does he correct this situation? By suggesting they all go for a beer. Oh that will solve everyone's problems.

Mr. Gates should have stayed at home instead of going on a tv show and get attention. "

If Gates would have listened to the Cop, showed his ID, the cop would have done his investigation & been on his way. But no…let’s throw out the race and be a jerk to the cop. Mr. Gates acted inappropriately and was arrested for it; race had nothing to do with it! Also, I feel that President Obama’s remarks were inappropriate to ALL Police Officers! "

He still asked for license, insurance and car paperwork. I complied with the cop’s requests, he checked my info & I was sent on my way. The cop did his job and I had no issues with it. Also, I’m a former Military Policeman, if you are respectful to the cops, things will turn out ok. "

I completely agree with the author that both sides were at fault, but it seems from your post that you blame Mr. Gates. I just read another one of your comments, and it seems to me that you like to view the worst in people...that aren't cops. It's a shame to have such a narrow view of people. "

AMEN to this! This officer was only doing his job. Suppose someone was was indeed breaking into Mr. Gates home? Isn't it better to err in his favor and protect his property? "
