The council is a legislative body and cannot direct city workers, but members have vowed support and some entered into the conversation this week.
Distefano said she lives on Union Avenue and is tired of seeing overgrown yards and ditches filled with trash.

The trash even includes rusty old cars and appliances, said Distefano.
She asked whose job it is to get people to keep their properties clean.
Rodney McGehee is in charge of code enforcement in Bogalusa, and the proper procedure includes contact and citation before the city can take action. The first step is reporting the problem. McGehee can be contacted at 732-6213.
Councilman Paul Penton said he’s ready to get something done. He arranged to meet with the administration’s Larry Miller to develop a request for the U.S. Army National Guard to come in and “help clean up some of this blight.” He also suggested enlisting volunteer assistance.
The National Guard has previously been mentioned as a possible partner in the demolition of the growing number of condemned houses throughout Bogalusa. The city currently does not have the equipment to tear the buildings down and can only burn those that are far from other structures and power lines.
Distefano said she believes the trash clean up should be up to the residents involved.
“I think it’s the responsibility of the people who live there or the owners,” she said.
Distefano said she just wants somebody to make sure everybody does their part to keep, or make, Bogalusa beautiful.

or a shady location such as you describe where citizens are allowed to dump trash, junked out cars & other rotting debris in their yards providing the perfect places for aforementioned "Drug Deals" ...I agree fully that something has to be done in this community about the drug problem, but citizens also have to have some self respect & take care of their properties to make sure that it does not provide a welcoming atmosphere for such. I keep my home & yard nice & I am truly blessed with great neighbors who do the same! "

Your comments sicken me to no end, it is for those like you who beleive that there is nothing wrong with having trash & filth in your yard that there is a problem. How can you expect people to respect a community that has a mindset such as yours, if they see yards that look like landfills they will treat this community as such!! And as far as the drug problem, what do you think is the more inviting environment, a neat & clean neighborhood....CONTINUED "

YES, John Jaye, it's time to stop pointing fingers and passing the buck.
Unfortunately, that's what I get when I bring this issue up at City Hall Council Meetings.
NOBODY in City Hall is willing to DO SOMETHING about sprucing up our Bogalusa.
Our Mayor tells me, "We don't have any money to do that, Mr. Chandler"
... Let's start by cleaning up City Hall! NEW BLOOD! LEADERS WHO C A N D O !
GO BOGALUSA! "

Thank you, John Jaye, for telling it like it is. I have a brother living in St Tammany Parish who refuses to visit me here in Bogalusa. He calls Bogalusa, "scuzzy" and "depressing" ...
I moved here 7 years ago from Mandeville, and understand how he feels about Bogalusa. Bogalusa needs a "makeover" ...
We need to CHANGE the FIRST IMPRESSIONS people have about Bogalusa... beginning with City Hall.
Where is our Civic Pride?
GO BOGALUSA! "

If his line is busy, cal back later and again and again.

Pardon my typo... I meant to say RETIRED ... Bogalusa should be a magnet drawing MORE retirees to settle here in such a beautiful, laid-back setting.
I do, however, want to BEGIN an UPWARD TREND that will guarantee JOBS right here in Bogalusa for our kids when they finish school.
Bogalusa needs all ages ... elderly, young, middle age ... EVERYBODY!
GO BOGALUSA!
Our kids should NOT have to LEAVE Bogalusa to find work! "

I second the nomination, Bogalusa needs a "Go Getter" to get this job done ASAP!
Will YOU run for Mayor, Fate Ferrell?
GO BOGALUSA! "

I agree, John ... This issue needs to be addressed ABRUPTLY!
I have seen such incidences first hand, and it is scary! I hope our Bogalusa Police dept will join the Sheriff Dept and put a stop to this.
This is an ongoing battle that hurts Bogalusa !
