Convicted Franklinton cop shooter Kenneth “Pickle” McClain was found to be an habitual offender during a hearing in Franklinton Wednesday and his sentence was increased to 60 years.

A Washington Parish jury found McClain, 20, guilty of both first-degree attempted murder and convicted felon in possession of a firearm in July. The case stems from a Sept. 17, 2007, incident when Franklinton Police Officer Craig James was pursuing McClain in a foot chase, according to police. James reportedly sprayed McClain with pepper spray and McClain answered with five gunshots at close range, hitting the officer once in the neck. James survived the wound, and returned to the force a few months later.

McClain, who had been convicted on drug charges previously, was sentenced to 52 and a half years in prison, but the District Attorney’s Office also asked the court that McClain be classified as an habitual offender.

That hearing came Wednesday when Judge Raymond Childress found McClain to be an habitual offender and re-sentenced him to serve 60 years for the attempted murder, said Rick Wood, spokesperson for District Attorney Walter Reed.

Previously, Childress sentenced McClain to 40 years for the attempted murder conviction and 12 and a half years on the firearm’s charge, to be served consecutively.

The new sentence is 60 years for the attempted murder and 12 and a half for the firearms charge, to be served concurrently, Wood said.

But with the habitual offender label, McClain’s sentence could have topped 100 years. The maximum jail time for attempted first-degree murder of a police officer is 50 years, but an habitual offender label can double the sentence.

In any event, McClain, who goes by “Pickle” in the streets of Franklinton, is not expected back home for next 60 years.

He will serve his time at Hunt Correctional Center, a maximum-security prison in Iberville Parish, without the benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
