Alcohol is banned from being sold on Sundays in Washington Parish, but that didn’t stop one man from setting up shop in a Bogalusa neighborhood last weekend.

Bogalusa resident Richard Myres, 46, was cited for selling alcohol after hours and for not possessing a liquor license after Washing-ton Parish Sheriff deputies saw him selling beer and mixed drinks out of his SUV last Sunday morning.

Previously, the Wash-ington Parish Sheriff’s Office had received several complaints from local residents that the area around 2nd Ave-nue had been receiving unusual amounts of traffic on Sundays, ac-cording to a WPSO statement.

The Washington Pa-rish Street Crimes action team, in conjunction with the Boga-lusa Police Depart-ment, followed up with an investigation last Sunday, beginning with a traffic stop.

“Det. Robert Harris, a member of the taskforce, made a traffic stop on a passenger car for a simple violation of no turn signal,” according to WPSO. “As the investigation progressed Harris observed an open beer in the center console of the vehicle. Det. Harris asked the driver about the beer as it was unusual for someone to possess beer on a Sunday morning. The violator advised that he had just purchased the alcohol from a street vendor for $3.”

Investigators soon learned that a man, later identified as Myers, was selling beer and liquor out of his SUV at the corner of 2nd Avenue and 4th Street.

“Officers arrived at the location and quickly found a man in a matching vehicle at that location,” according to WPSO. “The suspect had several tents set up on the property and even had food being prepared, A search of the vehicle revealed a large a-mount of alcohol, in-cluding two large ice chests filled with beer. A further look at the vehicle revealed several unopened cases of beer and two flats of liquor.”

The alcohol was then seized, and Myers was issued the citations, which carry $100 fines and up to 30 days in jail on both charges.

" I can't understand how some people think this is ok. A business has to pay rent, electric bills, TAXES, etc... and to only have a $100 fine when an alcohol permit cost more the fine. This man pays NO TAXES, NO PERMITS, NO RENT, NO BUSINESS PERMIT, NO PHONE BILL, Nothing! Why don't we all do this if that's the fine? He has made more profit in 1 day then the fine and I know he has been doing this. "

" The issue here is not about selling alcohol ...

It is about breaking the LAW!

The Sheriff is SWORN to uphold the LAWS on our books...

We, the voters, VOTE for these laws ... in most cases.

We cannot pick and chose which laws to obey!

GO "BOBBY CROWE!" Good Job! "

" ... where do you draw the line? would it be alright to sell soda from a personal vehicle, without a license?

... this man committed a serious crime. and he charged more for his beer than the going price!

... without laws, we have anarchy ...

... his fine should be STIFF!

... Do we know that he was NOT also selling drugs?

    ... other contraband? "

" Headline should read: Man busted for selling alcohol on Sunday, breaking the law, having no alcohol license, extortion, selling alcohol from his SUV, etc.

A STIFF FINE AND POSSIBLY IMPRISONMENT SHOULD BE IMPOSED FOR THIS CRIME!

    BREAKING LAWS ARE CRIMES!

... IT REALLY HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEER! "

Seriously, the bootlegger should've been shut down. Never have understood the big deal over alcohol on Sunday, though. "

" Seriously!? They busted this guy for selling BEER on Sunday?! What a waste of time and energy. They could have been getting drug dealers off the streets if they actually cared. Shame of the police for not working harder on the real problem in Bogalusa. But then where would all of you buy your drugs? "

" Guess the sheriff's mad now cause he didn't get his tax plan. Wonder if this street crimes unit will be cut now?

This guy should set up over there by the brown building with the golf course behind it on Hwy 21. I believe that is a liquor sold on sunday district. He wouldn't have any problems.

It takes cooperation with the BPD and WPSO Steet Crimes unit to make this "BUST"! What a Joke!!! Wonder how many crack heads, pushers and dealers strolled by why they were apprehending this guy!

Wonder where they drank the evidence? "

" If they (the persons who are willing to pay outrageous amounts of money for Beer / liquor on Sundays) would get in their vehicle and drive 11 miles or so to Conoco in Sun it'll be a whole lot cheaper (They sell it around the clock). Not to mention getting yourself jammed up buy boot leg liquor / Beer on a corner. Just a thought. "

" This is what happens when you live in a country hick place like Washington Parish! What's the difference between drinking alcohol on Sunday than any other day of the week? We need to get with the rest of the world and stop living in the 1900's! This is ridiculous. "

" he will just get a slap on the wrist. How come our city Police couldn't do this , and it took our sheriff Dept. to do it? Hats off to our SheriffDept. Way to go BDP for letting him get away with it. We the citizens of Bogalusa should ban together and have the Sheriff Dept. take over and get rid of BPD. "

This is only a slap on the wrist! Should be MUCH MORE PENALTY FOR THIS CRIME!

They also had no license to sell alcohol!

STIFFEN THE FINE AND CLOSE THESE CRIMINALS DOWN! "

" Congratulations to the WSPO great work. Got some illegal activity off the street, maybe next they can work on the drug problem. Seems to me that it is sold at random street corners and out of cars. And it is illegal everyday of the week not just on Sundays. "
