Bogalusa ‘crackhouse’ closed briefly, then reopens

Bogalusa City Councilman Paul Penton has a simple word for the home at 1117 Long Avenue: “Crackhouse.”

Actually, it’s not much of a home at all. Dozens of cigarette butts litter the kitchen sink, razor blades and latex gloves lie on a nearby table and funky furniture and sour smells linger from one dark room to the next.

“It’s been condemned for a long time,” said Penton, who came through the neighborhood with other volunteers, including fellow councilman Michael O’Ree, two weeks ago during the “Fix My Block” campaign.

Volunteer work crews picked up outside trash and boarded up the windows and doors to the blue house that sits directly across from Long Avenue Elementary School, which has been closed for several years.

Penton said he’s not sure who the owner is, but squatters and drug users use the house to sell drugs and other activities.

“It’s basically a crackhouse,” Penton said, adding he thought the boarded up windows and doors would keep people out.

He was wrong.

Less than 10 days after the volunteers worked on the house, the back door was already open again, with the piece of plywood that was barring the entrance thrown to the ground.

“And now they’re already back in it — to do drugs,” Penton said disgustingly.

Before calling the newspaper about the house, Penton said he called police, who investigated and found discarded pipes and other drug paraphernalia like dirty spoons and plastic baggies.

The city councilman said he plans on boarding the back door again, and hopes that this time, the crackheads don’t come back.

" How hard would it be to set up surveillance and find out who the culprits are? Come BPD, this is too easy! Then after you grab the CRACKHEADS they’ll take you to their dealer if, you hang a stiff enough charge against them?

" Isn't it the policy for the Bogalusa City Council to give the owner(s) a certain number of days to clean or raze the property, THEN the city tears it down at the owner's expense? Why can't this be done since the property has been condemned for a long time according to the article. "
