DN to host community Care and Share events

For nearly 30 years The Daily News has sponsored the Care and Share program to provide food for needy local residents during the Christmas season.

This year, as even the normally financially secure feel the economic pinch, wise giving just might require more than  simple good intentions.

Donations that provide a return somewhat more substantial than a warm and fuzzy feeling can benefit both recipients and givers. So this year, besides accepting straight-forward donations, The Daily News will sponsor both a Care and Share bake sale and a Care and Share garage sale.

The bake sale, which will offer homemade cakes, cookies, pies and more just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, will take place Saturday, Nov. 21 outside Main Street Grocery and Wal-Mart starting at 8 a.m.

The Care and Share garage sale will provide additional opportunities for caring and sharing. It will be held starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 at the former Farmers’ Market site on Columbia Street in front of The Daily News office.

Not only will the newspaper offer its own big multi-family sale, it encourages others to set up their own sales at the same place and time for a $20 donation per 15-ft. by 15-ft. space.

The community garage sale will also feature hot coffee and tasty baked goods for sale.

Anybody who would like to donate items, other than clothing, for The Daily News to sell for the benefit of Care and Share can drop them off at the 525 Avenue V office during regular work hours before the sale date.

The goal for this year’s Care and Share is to provide 75 Washington Parish families with food vouchers of $75 each. The vouchers will be distributed the week before Christmas.
