Hurricane season not over till it’s over

The famous New York Yankee catcher Yogi Berra had a quote about baseball that can just as appropriately be used for the hurricane season: It ain’t over until it’s over. Last week’s tropical storm Ida is sure proof of that saying.

Thankfully, Ida just gave us a few gusts of winds and with a few sprinkles of rain, if any.

Still, the storm came rumbling through in November, near the end of the hurricane season. Usually, if there are no hurricanes by the end of September, we can relax and not worry about hurricane kits and evacuation routes until next season.

But Ida should be a reminder to us that we cannot let our guard down, even if the hurricane season is winding down.

State and local officials were on the ball, monitoring the storm and preparing with sandbags and the like.

We hope that residents were just as cautious and filling up their cars with gas, checking their hurricane kits and making sure they were ready.

Remember, the hurricane season extends from June 1 until Nov. 31.

Katrina should have taught all of us a big lesson in being alert and being prepared. Ida was the proof of the pudding. Don’t let your guard down and be prepared — even if it is November.
