Just in time for the big Saints game this weekend, Jeff and Lori Winborn are opening up a new place in Bogalusa where people can pick up a bucket of fried chicken to savor as they sit in front of the TV and yell for the home team.

The couple, who already own Glynn’s Drive-In on Avenue F, will open the doors to their Big R Chicken, 1327 S. Columbia St., at 10:30 a.m. today. It will stay open until 8 p.m., and that will be its hours of operation seven days a week.

The business will offer fried chicken and tenders, dirty rice, red beans and rice, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, onion rings, French fries and more.

The Winborns took over Glynn’s two years ago, and it was some of those customers who prompted the opening of the new restaurant, said Jeff Winborn.

“People kept coming in and asking for chicken boxes,” he said. “We didn’t have enough room to put in fryers there, so we went in search of another building.”

They found the vacant Big R Daiquiri Shop, which had previously been the Big R Grill, so they leased the space and switched the focus to chicken.

When asked if he has a special recipe, Win-born was aghast.

“I can’t tell you that,” he smiled. “But, yes we do.”

The couple is ready to offer the product of that recipe to the people of Bogalusa. As they work this weekend to “establish the flow” they ask the public to “bear with us, but come see us.”

“And if chicken isn’t your cup of tea, go to Glynn’s and get a po-boy,” said Winborn.

Big R Chicken has a small eat-in area, and customers can drive through or take out from the counter.

Anybody with a large order, like for a football game or other special event, is asked to call ahead at 732-1888.

Winborn said his business is evidence of something good happening in Bogalusa.

“Bogalusa is growing again,” he said. “The car wash and O’Reilly’s are coming. The McDonald’s just opened. The local community is helping each other, and people are staying local.”

" I think that it is good that bogalusa is trying to grow but we DO NOT need another auto part store or another carwash....however I love me some Mcdonalds......but that ain't the point we really need to invest in things that attract the younger generation such as a shopping mall or something so that adults can be persuade to spend their money at home vs. having to go out of town to spend it hey after all we do need it here. Congratulations on Big R Chicken...I wish you guys the best of LUCK!!! "

" A brand spanking new Super Wal-Mart with everything under 1 roof would be fantastic! Then, we could do all our shopping in Bogalusa, instead of going to Columbia, Ms. or Covington, La. While we are there, we also fill our car up and save again! "

like a SAM's CLUB... so we can make groceries, gas up the car, get RX drugs, the works. "

I am somewhat concerned about the safety of this neighborhood, however. I hope they have protection "in case" there is criminal activity there.

I personally prefer the Po Boys at Glynns Drive in on Avenue F...

To each their own, as the old maid said as she kissed the cow.

    GO BOGALUSA! "

This is what you get when you have a family owned/ operated business, so Kudos & Best Wishes to you as you begin you new venture. Keep up the good work & your business will blossom. To bad there are some people out there that don't believe in small town America, they only want to see chain stores & corporations come in, open & take over...but lets take Block buster as an example, at least Video Plus is still here, I have been a loyal customer there for years & will remain b/c they treat you like a person, not just a dollar!! Way back when, Big R had great curly-q fries -- wouldn't it be great if they brought those back? "

" Great fried chicken at Big R's and excellent po-boys at Glenn's. Best wishes to the owners! I just wish that we could get much needed jobs for people here also! A big retail store, such as Super Walmart and more places for entertainment would also be great. I do read about all the old memories here and have been here for 30 years, we just absolutely need jobs to keep people here. "

" I agree with most of the people, we do not need anymore car washes in Bogalusa, nor do we need another auto parts store. What we need is a better community of fast acting economy increasing complexes of stores. I think that we should tear down the far end of the walmart area where Rite Aid used to be and make a mall using that area plus all the mini stores on the slot that lead up to walmart. By doing this these places could be placed into the mall and this also adds more value to the supplies of the stores. By building a bigger store complex it will attract more people and more money, meaning a better economy. Did you know that the Bogalusa Wal-mart is the smallest wal-mart owned in the U.S.? I learned this when a very close friend was working for Wal-mart. Also, have you ever thought about our wal-mart? I mean, it is the only wal-mart in Washington parish!!!!!! "
