Cassidy ‘Bark’ — dogs are allowed in city parks, says councilwoman

For years signs have been up at Bogalusa’s Cassidy, Goodyear and other parks proclaiming that dogs were not welcome, and probably at least most canine citizens have obeyed and refrained from entering the alluring green spaces throughout town.

The problem is, there aren’t really any other public places for the pooches to get some fresh air and exercise.

That prompted City Councilwoman Wendy Perrette, who likes to take her “girls,” a couple of aging dachshunds, for walks, to look into the law.

It turns out, dogs are not really prohibited from enjoying the parks most of the time, and during a council meeting Tuesday, Perrette asked that the signs be changed to reflect the real rules.

“Ordinance 1825 says that no dogs are allowed during scheduled events,” she said.

It also states that metal signs quoting the law “shall be posted at the entrance and exit areas of all city-owned parks and playgrounds.”

Apparently, the signs were posted, but they weren’t accurate.

The ordinance states that during regular hours and when no events are in progress: Dogs must be leashed and under the control of a responsible adult. Dogs must be wearing vaccination tags and be up-to-date on parasite control. Dogs must not be aggressive toward people or other animals. Dog owners will have bags to clean up after their dogs.

Due to the Festival in the Park this weekend, the canine celebrations will have to wait until Monday. But everyone is advised to break out the leashes and to get the pooper scoopers ready for a trip to the park.

" Thank you, Wendy Perrette, for this information. My "little girl" wants to jump out the car window when we drive through Cassidy Park. "Snug" is a Chihuahua/Terrier mix and goes "bananas" when I take her to "parkie-parkie" to see the squirrels and other animals there. She does not understand WHY she cannot get out and investigate these animals in a PARK. I used to take her for a walk alone the lakefront in Mandeville. EVERY PARK SHOULD WELCOME DOGS! ... just as every dog should have a child! THEY GO TOGETHER!

Obviously, owners must be responsible for their four-legged friends being good "citizens"... "

... Dogs enjoy the company of other dogs. I'd like to see a section "fenced off" as a dog park. Other cities do this. ... a safe place for dogs to frolic and play! NICE!

... I agree with "grandma"... and SNUG votes for it as well.

... YEP, her very own dog-goned Dpg Park! WOOF! WOOF! "

" CASSIDY PARK is one of the BRIGHT SPOTS in Bogalusa!

PLEASE,. let's preserve and make this "PARK" as attractive and as "user friendly" as we can!

Those who manage this park are doing a GREAT JOB... my hat is off to you, one and all!

Likewise, Good Year Park ... we NEED these parks... they DRAW PEOPLE TO THEM!

The make our Bogalusa a more beautiful City ...

... MY DREAM For Columbia Street... a TOWN SQUARE, where demolished buildings USED TO STAND! a DOWNTOWN PARK... complete with trees, benches, vendor stands, modern lighting, flower beds, green lawns, to ATTRACT people to our downtown area of town...

... Small shops along Columbia Street, Mom and Pop stores, ... places where our citizens and VISITORS can buy LOCAL BOGALUSA AND WASHINGTON PARISH GOODS!

... not to replace BIG Wal-Mart ... but to keep SOME of the money spent here in our parish and in our city... not go to Benton, Arkansas!

... I'm thinking a first class MOVIE THEATER, too... on Columbia Street!

... some more really nice sit-down restaurants on Columbia Street ... (not just burger joints and chicken joints)... but in addition to these fast-food eateries.

... modern lighting, better walkways, a SHOW PLACE to all who come "downtown"... that Bogalusa is PROUD of our beautiful City!

... another MAGNET to DRAW people to Bogalusa! ... WHY should our people have to drive to surrounding towns to SHOP?

We CAN have everything right here in our beautiful City of Bogalusa!

... DOWN with the old on Columbia Street and UP with a renovated Columbia Street!

... when a downtown area draws finance companies and rent-to-own businesses, that is the first sign of decay!

... PLEASE, folks... let's reverse that trend!

    What do YOU think?

" After hearing about this article my husband, my three year old, and myself took our "boy" Jack to the park armed with a leash and bags for messes. We had a great twenty minutes just walking and having a good family day spent together. Then from behind the donkey gate came a voice of a man who works there saying that dogs were not allowed in the park. I started to tell him of this article that I read and he CALLED THE POLICE ON US!!! Being that I had my daughter we just quietly left without causing a scene in front of her but I am outraged and I only wish I was there alone so that I could have spoken to the cops myself! Please get this story straight so that people who love and take cre of their animals can enjoy time together. The park was littered everywhere you look with trash from humans so I don't see how people who are willing to pick up after their animals would cause and harm to a park? Please fix this problem! "
