Both teams struggled to score in the first half and BGS led 14-9 at the break. Eight of the Lady Bucs’ 14 first-half points came from freshman Caroline Haik, who also blocked a pair of shots in the half. Haik finished with a team-high 15 points despite sitting much of the second half with four fouls.
The Lady Bucs got rolling in the third quarter, expanding their lead to nine by the start of the fourth frame.

“I was pleased with the girls especially in the second half. A lot of them, it’s their first time to be in a playoff situation like this,” he said. “The way they came out, they came out kind of shocked and kind of intimidated but I thought they picked it up and they competed. In the second half, offensively when we got some easier baskets we tended to defend a little better and it opened things up.”
King said he was very pleased with the way the rest of his team picked up the slack when his top scorer had an off night.
“You know, when your leading scorer (Dykes) only puts up five points and you still win a road game that says a lot about how your team played,” he said.
In addition to Haik’s 15, senior Whitney Crowe scored nine, Beth Reedy added six and Dykes scored 5. Senior Jasmine Lavigne added four and Brittany Cooper added a bucket.
The Bucs moved on to face regular-season district champ Brookhaven. King said the first thing to stand out about the Lady Cougars is their speed.
“They’re fast, they’ve got good shooters. Offensively, they’re a headache and defensively they’re everywhere,” he said. “They’re a very good team and well coached.”
Bowling Green gave Brookhaven a scare Saturday, but fell 32-31.
