Pine High School has named Tammy Voth its new softball coach.
Voth replaces Tate Kennedy, who also coaches junior high football and is the head coach of the girls’ basketball team. With softball and basketball overlapping, Kennedy didn’t feel it was fair to either team. He will continue in his role with the other two teams.
Voth, a 1986 Pine High graduate, played basketball for Pine. She didn’t play softball at Pine because they didn’t have a program when she was in school, but she has played the game most of her life.
“I’m real excited,” Voth said. “I just learned today (Wednesday) that I’m going to be the assistant volleyball coach, so I’m going to be doing both of those. I’m ready to see a change. We had some good seasons when softball first started, and we’ve had some good seasons since, but they just have not been consecutive. That’s what I want. I want us to improve, get better each year, win more games. That’s my goal.”
Voth moves to Pine from Thomas Elementary. She has coached association basketball mostly.
“I’ve coached basketball for years. I did coach softball in Franklinton when my girls were younger. Pretty much everybody around here knows me as being into ball. I’ve always had a desire to be with sports, so this is like a blessing that I get to come and do this,” Voth said.
Voth said one of the things she’s learned is you have to have the respect of the players and they’ve got to respect you. Also, they have to want to play for you, and they’ve got to love the sport.
“If you don’t have those two things it’s going to be tough. I think if I respect the kids and show them that I love sports, they will in turn show me that they do, too and then our team will improve. You’ve got to have that for your kids to excel in anything,” Voth said.
Pine principal Jennifer Thomas, a 1992 Pine High graduate, said she’s known Voth her whole life.
“I knew Mrs. Tammy would be an awesome coach because of her work ethic,” Thomas said. “Her work ethic speaks for itself. First, she’s an awesome teacher.
“And she’s always had a passion for sports. She loves them. She played basketball when she was in high school here at Pine. She loves it, she expressed an interest in it and I knew that being the good teacher she is and the great parent, she’s going to be an awesome coach.”
After graduating from Pine Voth went to work at Save-A-Lot for seven years.
She then went to college at Southeastern Louisiana University and graduated in 1996 with a degree in elementary education.
Voth will be teaching eighth-grade Earth science.
Voth is married to Kevin Voth. The two have five children, including Pine graduates Kayla and Kristen along with freshman Karley, sixth-grader Karson and sophomore Kaleb.
